THE MOTHERBOARDS are the vibrant message boards founded in March 2001 by New York
nightclub impresario and writer CHI CHI VALENTI to encourage nightlife alternatives in a
difficult club climate. Much as Valenti's seminal venue MOTHER (1996-2000) did, "The
Boards" unite disparate club cultures to produce new hybrids and give untried artists
and club nights a place to start. The 1300 active members of The Motherboards
include hundreds of performers and artists working in many disciplines and cities. In
2002 multimedia artist TONYA KNUDSEN founded the ARTMAKER FORUM to encourage and
channel this tidepool of talent.
ARCADIA! is the first group show of ArtMaker artists, and has been
created in large part on the boards themselves. Knudsen and her
co-producers have taken the unifying theme of a Tarot deck's Major
Arcana ("Greater Secrets",) asking each artists to choose from these 22
cards and archetypes. Participants include many familiar and
up-and-coming names from the downtown milieu, like Pyamid Club founder
HATTIE HATHAWAY, VELOCITY Chyaldd of the band VULGARAS, MISSY GALORE of
TeleTwinTowers.org, MADAME DOLLHAUS of Williamsburg's DOLLHAUS GALLERY,
and ROB ROTH (multimedia star behind CLICK + DRAG and recent BLONDIE
visuals.) They also include Bronx-based neo-Fluxist DREAMBOT,
Cincinatti's noted Club Costumers ZAZOO AND SATORI and Chicago
dollmakers JO-JO BABY and GIGI DELUXE (school of the late GREER
LANGTON.) We urge you to visit our artist pages for more on the three
dozen participating artists.
Arcadia! will debut May 30th at CBGB 313 GALLERY, at a two-floor
interactive performance spectacular with shows for each of the 22 Major
Arcana cards. Guests are invited to dress as any of the Major Arcana,
from "The Fool" through "The World". The exhibition of multimedia and
visual art will be on display and available for purchase at CBGB 313
Gallery through June 20.
